Since the Qur’an was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (May the Peace and Blessings be upon him) by Almighty Allah (God) more than 1400 years ago, Islam has prided itself on freedom of information and the ease of worship through the concise narrations and traditions of our dearly beloved Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as described in the Qur’an (Holy book in Islam). It is the duty of every Muslim to propagate the word even through a simple verse of the Qur’an. At the same token, our faith also forbids forcefulness and compulsion in its adherence.
The reason for it being touted as one of the fastest growing religions in the world (Australian Bureau of Statistics) is that its belief system adheres to the nature of the human being and is synonymous with the logic of the human mind and spirit.
This growth rate was further realised in Australia as the number of adherents in this country has more than doubled in the last 20 years alone through birth, migration and conversions. The support of Muslims through birth and migration was provided by their family, however there was no particular body as such in existence that supported the New Muslim through their transition to the new way of life and this concept was what brought about the need to form an organisation.
In 2001 the United Muslims of Australia (UMA) formed a Converts Committee to satisfy the vacuum that was present due to the lack of services being offered to the Australian populous and the New Muslims as a whole.
The group began with five committed brothers whose sole purpose was to offer support and guidance to the new Muslims and provide them with a method of transitioning into a new community and a new life with ease.
These services consisted of one on one teaching of the basic fundamentals, the pillars and belief system, the prayer and that which is permissible and forbidden in Islam. Furthermore, the New Muslim was introduced to his or her new brethren in order to acclimatise them to their new of way of life.
The Australian New Muslims Association (ANMA) exists as the main body in Australia that offers support, education and mentoring for the New Muslim, which was formed in 2004 as a non-profit organisation. ANMA now offers many services such as educational programs, counselling services, and financial support. Our main aim is to instil in those who are interested or have embraced Islam a positive view about the brotherhood and sisterhood in Islam.
The Association now consists of more than 20 members and has designated educational facilities for the purpose of propagating Islam according to the Qur’an and the teaching of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to the masses. The services are offered to Muslims by birth, New Muslims and those with enquiring minds.
We in ANMA believe that our duty is to support our brethren, our newly reverted brothers and sisters or any member of the Australian community that wishes to learn more about this beautiful way of leading life. We hope to propagate the message of Islam and also to foster a greater understanding of Muslims amongst the wider Australian community and as such to clarify and correct any misconceptions with shortcomings that people may have towards our religion, as our mission statement suggests:
“Invite (all) to the Way of thy Lord with wisdom and beautiful preaching; and argue with them in ways that are best and most gracious.” Noble Qur’an 16:125
